What's a roofing square?

One square = 100 sq ft of roof surface. Contractors price jobs, order shingles, and quote tear-off in squares. A typical 2,000 sq ft single-family roof is a 20-square job. Your roof's surface is bigger than your home's footprint — pitch adds area:

Methodology

Per-square-foot rates are derived from the whole-roof replacement ranges published on each city guide (compiled from contractor quotes, county permit records, and published rate data), assuming a typical 2,000 sq ft roof. Cities without verified replacement-range data are excluded. Estimates exclude structural decking repair, which is priced after tear-off.

Is this estimate a quote?

No — it's a planning estimate from local range data. Get at least three written, itemized quotes from licensed Florida (DBPR) contractors before committing.

Why is my quote higher than the estimate?

Quotes reflect tear-off layers, decking repair, upgraded underlayment, ventilation work, and permit fees. Florida's wind-load code requirements also add engineering scope that varies by county.
